Professor Tony Walter

Renowned sociologist Professor Tony Walter works at the Centre for Death and Society at the University of Bath, UK, where he is an Emeritus Professor of Death Studies. After early writings on religion, landscape, social security reform and basic income, he has for the past 30 years researched and taught about death and society.

Tony’s fifteen books include Funerals – and how to improve them (Hodder, 1990); On Bereavement: the culture of grief (Open University Press, 1999); The Mourning for Diana (Berg 1999); What Death Means Now (Policy Press, 2017); and, most recently, Death in the Modern World (Sage 2020).
